VirtualBox: Import OVA

-----
VIRTUALBOX TUTORIAL – IMPORTING OVA
VirtualBox is a program that allows Virtual Machine (VM) to be created so that it runs on the Host Machine as if there are two real computer machines in the front of you.
Virtual Machine is useful, amongst all, for trying out software without disturbing the Host Machine setting. Any changes to Virtual Machine will not affect Host Machine at all. Furthermore, the Virtual Machine is “portable” in the sense that it can be copied from one computer to another.
The following tutorial guides you to import a pre-created Virtual Machine using an Oracle VirtualBox Appliance (OVA) file.
  1. Run VirtualBox Manager
    Go to menu File/Import Appliance.

  2. Choose OVA file.
Click Choose and Browse the location of the OVA file.

  3. Import OVA file.
View file details and click Import to proceed.

  4. Import Done.
New Virtual Machine has been successfully created from the imported OVA.

  5. Check Setting.
Before running the virtual machine, check the following setting (go to menu Machine/Settings).
    a. Base Memory
By rule of thumb, it should be some value not greater than half of the memory of Host Machine.

    b. Processor setting.
Some VM, e.g. Android VM requires PAE function.

    c. Check storage.
Sometimes there are missing storages attached to the VM and this might cause error.

    d. Check network.
Network setting can be customized according to how you want your VM to connect to the computer network. As for a start, just leave it set to NAT.

    e. USB Controller.
Some host machines may not have support for USB Controller. If VirtualBox reports that USB Controller is not supported and you do not plan to use the controller, untick the option.
    f. Shared Folder.
Shared Folder is useful especially when you want to copy files between Host Machine and Virtual Machine. If, however, VirtualBox reports that there is missing Shared Folder, check the Folders List and delete any missing entry.

  6. Run.
You can now run the VM by clicking the start Button.

The VM will run within its own windows as follows.
